The history of the PRS Group began in Bombay in 1856, when Premchand Roychand, one of the most prominent personalities in the financial markets of his time, founded Premchand Roychand & Sons, which today functions as the Group’s apex entity.

Our History in India

The company was started in India in 1956 as the ‘Permacel’ division of the global health care giant ‘Johnson and Johnson . The ‘Permacel ‘division was established in the late 1920s was became among the Global leaders in the pressure sensitive tape business. The ubiquitous ‘CELLO TAPE’ and ‘DUCT TAPE’ were among the globally recognized innovations in the tape business by Permacel. When it was set up in India- it was the pioneer in establishing the pressure sensitive tape business in India. Later it expanded into the Pressure sensitive label business in India and emerged among the top adhesive label and Tape Company in India.

In 1999 PRS group acquired Johnson and Johnson ‘Permacel’ business in India. The company name was changed to ‘PRS Permacel Pvt. Ltd and under the new ownership continued its growth path in the specialty label and tape business in India.

New Brands and manufacturing units were set up contributing to the company growth. After successfully running the company for over 22 years the company was acquired by ‘Grindwell Norton Ltd. (Saint-Gobain group) in May 2022.

Global export business is done under its ‘Solutions‘ brand through a dedicated professional team. Permacel has a dedicated team providing Brand protection solutions under the ‘KAVACH’ brand to customers under both the business divisions.

In order to provide world-class service to its esteemed customers, in 2010-11 Permacel set up a state-of-the-art, green field manufacturing facility based at Ambernath (approx. 60 kms north of Mumbai) in Maharashtra State, which covers a total constructed area of over one hundred thousand square feet. This facility encompasses the entire value chain starting from adhesive manufacturing to adhesive stock & tape coating to printing and finishing operations – all under one roof.

This plant is certified for ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and AS9100D quality assurance standards. The automotive manufacturing operations are certified for IATF 16949:2016 and the unit is also recognised as a Ford Q1 facility. This plant makes products which are sold under our brands ‘PERMACEL, IDCAL, KAVACH, & SAFECERIES’.

In 2015-16 to service the growing demand of customers for its Thermal insulation business sold under the Brand ‘CONZERVE’, a new facility was built.

In 2017-18 to handle the additional requirements of the Automotive Industry for its growing ‘IDCAL’ brand a second, fully certified plant was set up.

Both these new units are close to the main plant and are supported by a common support team. The Main plant houses Permacel’s ultra-modern R&D facility. This facility has been awarded recognition by the ´Department of Scientific and Industrial research (DSIR) since 2011.

Permacel has always aimed at achieving a ´Preferred Supplier´ status with its customers. To reach this objective, Permacel has created a pool of highly trained and experienced professionals, who understand and respond to every product and customer demand. The team is totally committed and motivated to provide customer satisfaction. Permacel currently has its head office in Mumbai India, with sales offices and channel partners strategically located across India.

● Permacel starts operations in India as an industrial division of J& J
● Launches the Ubiquitous CELLO tape in India

1960 - 1980

● Launches Specialty and electrical insulation Tapes including Double-sided Tapes
● Introduces Printed and Insulating Die Cut Labels
● Introduces Graphics on FORD and Massey Ferguson Tractors in India
● Starts Flexo printing on cloth, paper and film

1980 - 1999

● Launches Kapton Tapes, Glass Mica, Kapton Mica and other Insulation Tapes and
Laminates
● Introduces Decal technologies on Motorcycles for all Two-Wheeler OEMs in India

● First to develop HT Electrical Insulation scheme for Hitachi Motors used by the Indian
Railways
● Develops the largest range of Tamper evident & Brand protection solutions
● Selected as Supplier of Choice to international 4-wheeler/ CV companies setting up plant in
India – GM, Ford, Hyundai, Daewoo, Mazda, Mitsubishi etc.
● Among the first to launch Hologram technology in India
● Launches Varnish rich electrical Insulation tapes and develops Silicon Rubber-based
insulating tapes
● Becomes among the first 100 ISO certified companies in India

1999

PRS Group takes over Permacel Business from J&J and the company was named “PRS
PERMACEL PVT. LTD”

2000 - 2010

● Launches & brands.

● Files and receives many national and international Patents.

● Launches the first Exhaust manifold insulation solutions for Diesel locomotives made for the Indian Railways.

● Gets ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, TS 16949 certifications.

● Gets approval from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for supply of Labels/Graphics/Tapes for Civil Aviation Industry.

● Starts supplying locally made identification solutions to the Metro Rail sector.

● Launches Class 200 electrical insulation solutions to enhance the performance of Diesel Locomotives used by the Indian Railways.

● Develops Aviation grade and certified tapes and labels and emerges as Supplier of Choice with Commercial Airlines in India.

2010 - 2020

● Expands capacity through ancillary units.
● Strengthens systems through IATF, FORD Q1.
● Wins a large number of domestic/ international awards, recognition for Quality, Product
Design ISRO-approved and Sustainability.

● Launches NSF certified tapes.
● Launches Wire Harness Tapes, Black Out Tapes and Paint Protection Film Range for
Automotive Industry.
● Enters into Industrial Coating business supplies.
● Became only company to receive SGIA Sustainable Platinum Award.
● Launches products complying to Fire Safety Standard (EN 45545) for Indian Railways and
Metro rail.
● Becomes Supplier of Choice for graphics/ tapes with all Metro Rail corporations and Metro
rail coach builders in India.
● Continues to expand aggressively in the Automotive sector with the widest range of
solutions.
● Launches brands conzerve, IDCAL, and safe ceries.

2021 onwards

● Becomes AS9100D certified to meet the stringent requirements of Aviation industry.

● Moving towards cleaner energy source by the installation of 272 kWp Solar Rooftop Power Plant.

● Starts ancillary units for manufacturing Stocks for aesthetic enhancement and fabricated thermal insulation products.
